The decision to stand up for oneself is an act of liberation that is often accompanied by chaos and fear – who try their best to keep you within their reign. This is what I try to portray through a group of obscure human figures who overlap one another and are confined to a small space with many unseen doors that represent opportunity. One of these figures has been given power and is covering the others’ eyes with his many arms and hands. It is a dense and limiting space. Yet, a door opens, spewing radiant oranges, purples and yellows that I painted with dripping water techniques. The fluid nature of this light represents possibility and an exciting future, which a brave female figure sees and makes a bold decision to dash towards, much to the confusion of the others.

They try to hold her back, but will she make it to the door?

This painting is a scene of ongoing manipulation. The male character spotted behind a female is taking over her main character role. Although a female character thinks she is in the main spotlight. He is whispering to her ears and as he places his hands around the woman’s head. He is really eager to make his own vision towards the woman’s view. Her eyes are wide open, but she cannot see the future as it is not hers.

There are wolves’ heads staring from the dark. The woods are shaped like a woman’s body and the flowers are crawling, these objects symbolize the signal and impulses from nature. It disturbs the attention and intuition from the female character. Her naivety makes her ignore all the signs the surrounding is giving her. She enjoys this moment, where she is not in control. Gender in this painting represent dominant and submissive character and doesn’t mean as a gender itself.

This painting gives rise to contrasting emotions, as the vibrant and lighter colors of the subjects closer to us are placed against an eerie and somber winter sky painted with thick layers of earthy dark browns, umber and orange cadmiums. It is a symbolic and surrealist scene that depicts my arrival in Copenhagen – still grieving my fathers passing only few weeks before. My friend here described to me the uniquely Danish concept of “Hygge”, which is a comfortable sense of contentment and well-being that I experienced at that moment. The Dahlia flowers I saw radiated love and involvement, and the flamingo illustrates the social groups that gather cheerfully around the dining tables. This pleasant and pure feeling was like a breath of fresh air amidst my grief. It is a testament to the enduring people here who make the most out of a difficult winter.

What is right and what is wrong? And who gets to decide? Here, a burst of earth tone colors form several subjects: an amorphous shape appears to float as if suspended from the canvas, rectangular shapes in the background seem both fixed and falling, whilst a single flower and the incomplete and obscure figures of women appear closer to the viewer. Yet the scene feels delightfully ambiguous due to the use of my drip painting technique. It is a playful interaction between form and color that conveys a sense of perspective and depth to achieve a sort of non-objective sensation. Such is the purpose of this work, which was painted after an argument with my husband. “Love is not objective”, he said. Therefore, nobody is truly right or wrong.

The sense of the vertical movement of each body and its dandelion head evoke a feeling of unity and strength and accomplishment. Dandelions, as many of us know, are a symbol of power, hope, integrity and independence. Despite being trampled on, they thrive anywhere and everywhere and despite all odds – finding even the smallest spaces to grow. I paint women’s bodies with Dandelion heads as a tribute to the strong and independent women around the world. Many find themselves, invisible, abandoned yet continue to thrive. As the painting depicts, those who are not selfish bring a positive impact and help others grow with integrity.
